The Haps

Hello Friends of Georgia! Lots going on in our world and the world-at-large, but most important is that today, our girl is TWO months post-treatment - and she is feeling great!!! This week, she completed her four-week swim training class and competed in a mini-meet on Wednesday. She really loves to swim, and it's helping her continue to build up her stamina. So much so that she placed first and second in two of her events!

I would have gotten a better picture, but
she's just too darn FAST!

Today, Georgia and Ivy both performed some selections from "Wicked" with their musical theatre camp. They had a wonderful time and made their drama major mama extremely proud! Bravo!

Singing "Popular" with every bit of conviction she can muster.

Defying gravity, indeed.

Thank you, ZACH!

We're taking a break from camps for the next two weeks, and Georgia's got a surgery consultation, where we'll talk more about getting her port taken out - so exciting! If that can happen before she goes to camp in August, all she'll have to deal with while she's there is antibiotics three times a week - what a difference from last year! And she STILL had an awesome time in spite of it all. Such a trooper!

Stay tuned, and we hope y'all are staying cool and having a great summer!

Batter Up!

Georgia dressed as her Great Aunt Ruthie, a member of the All American Girls
Professional Baseball League, and truly in a league of her own. October 2006.

For all of you locals and/or baseball fans, Sunday, July 15th is CureSearch Night at the Round Rock Express game! Georgia and friends will be introduced at the game, and we'll have an info table to help spread the word about CureSearch AND get folks registered for the Austin walk on Saturday, September 29th. Best of all, we have discounted tickets available ($10 for reserved, $5 for lawn seats) and a portion of sales will go to The Peachy Keens' fundraising total for the walk. So you can have a great night at the ballpark and support childhood cancer research at the same time!

If you'd like tickets, email us (keepingeorgiaonyourmind at gmail dot com) by next Friday, June 29th. Thanks, y'all!

T-Minus 46 Days

Today marks 46 days until I Shave for the Brave with the 46 Mommas! I've talked with many of my fellow shavees, and they are some incredible women with very powerful stories. Event plans are coming together every day, and it should prove to be an awesome experience. And I'm less than $300 away from my goal, so who here wants to be a HERO for kids with cancer? Click the 46 Mommas button in the sidebar!

With Georgia now being off treatment, we are thinking more and more in terms of survivorship and how her journey might affect her down the road. Thankfully, St. Baldrick's recognizes the growing population of childhood cancer survivors and focuses part of its research funding on supporting and caring for these kids. Even though cures are obviously the ultimate goal, better, less toxic treatments with no long-term effects would be wonderful in the interim, so The Peachy Keens will continue to raise awareness, hope, and funds for warriors and survivors at every stage of the fight.

And for the record, according to Georgia's follow-up neuropyschological exam last week, she's testing HIGHER than she did four months into treatment. No evidence of any cognitive effects from 28 months of chemotherapy. Even the doctor was surprised and couldn't provide any explanation for the results, other than what we already know - our girl is superhuman.

OT Party!

Thursday, Georgia had her second OT appointment - all good! - and her OT party with the clinic staff. I can remember when she first started treatment, we saw another patient having her party, and it seemed like such a long way away. And here we are!

Hooray! Georgia got her Purple Heart from Child Life Specialist Nick!

The enclosed card says: The purple heart originated as and remains a military decoration awarded to those members of the armed forces wounded in action. As a member of Beads of Courage, your Completion of Treatment is also recognized by the prestigious purple heart.

We "heart" Beads of Courage!

Georgia's summer camp fun kicks off tomorrow with a couple of half-day camps this week at Ann Richards: Cake decorating in the morning and Robotics in the afternoon. Yes, you read that right! She also started a four-week swim training class last week, which she's really enjoying. Later on, she's got musical theatre, creative writing, and, saving the best for last - Camp Mystic! Lots of good times coming her way, and boy does she deserve them. Have a great week, y'all!

Survivor - OT!

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day - our first one to celebrate with Georgia OFF treatment! LIVESTRONG's definition of "survivor" is anyone diagnosed with cancer, so you are encouraged to identify yourself as a survivor from Moment One and throughout the rest of your life. A powerful, positive message, I'd say. So today, we're sending love and light to the 28 million cancer survivors worldwide and to an extra special warrior right here at home.

We saw the awesome mural on LIVESTRONG's headquarters building as we rode by on the train Friday evening. Funny enough, we were on our way to see a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" that incorporates some very elaborate bicycles. Perhaps Austin Bike Zoo could get Lance on a bike in a show sometime? Sounds like a great fundraiser!

Kicking back at the show
